Rice Paper Window Blinds
- A window blind is a type of window covering which is made with slats of fabric, wood, plastic or metal that adjust by rotating from an open position to a closed position by allowing slats to overlap. A roller blind does not have slats but comprises a single piece of material.
- a thin delicate material resembling paper; made from the rice-paper tree
- is not only not made from rice, it is not even, strictly speaking, paper. Rice paper is made from the pith of the Fatsia papyrifera tree. This material is used in Chinese paintings, however, it is never used in traditional Japanese calligraphy.
- Thin translucent edible paper made from the flattened and dried pith of a shrub, used in painting (esp. oriental) and in baking biscuits and cakes
- A common misnomer used to describe Oriental papers. There are no papers made from rice, although rice starch was traditionally used to size papers made of Kozo (mulberry plant), Gampi, or Mitsumata.
Red Buddha
More from my collection of boxes, statues and stuff. The gold bamboo screen and the painted buddha I bought in San Anselmo, California which is rich with cool antique stores. The box was a gift from my Mom, and the dried Japanese Maple leaves are from my garden. This is lit using the overhead light in my studio, and daylight from a north facing window, on the right, partially filtered through rice paper blinds.
Morning light through the east window
This kitchen was impossibly dark when I started, and now, it's got great light all day long. My grandmother had rice paper blinds installed, plain white on the N and S windows, and one with a cherry blossom pattern on the east.
